ArtAsiaPacific is a bimonthly magazine that covers artists from 67 countries, from the middle east to oceania. A editorial magazine, most of the content is text, with articles on artists, types of contemporary art(issues have ranged from performance, sculpture, etc.) The magazine is the what I believe the only magazine to have a yearly almanac that covers the artwork of famous artists, and what the main galleries are in each country. Their resources are pretty extensive. This issue is the more recent redesign of the magazine, which occurred about a year ago. The magazine is about 15 years old now.

Etapes is a design and visual culture magazine that hails from what I believe is France. I originally picked up this magazine because of the use of deks and headers, and the article on the International Herald Tribune Design along with the article on the MAD museum. However, I’m not sure what is wrong with this magazine, as the margins for the edges are SUPER tight, and rather distracting. While the content is nice(there was information on the Designer’s Republic, some other noteworthy graphic designers, etc) the placement of the content into layouts killed it for me. I guess in short I’m really just citing this magazine in hopes that it’ll be better the next time I picked it up. But for now, cramped, cluttered pages with otherwise interesting content/subject matter.-Jon

Foam

Foam is an international photography magazine that hails from the Netherlands. A mix of editorial/photo, Foam has articles with the photography, in most cases where the photo work is before the written copy and never together. There are foldouts, changes in paper, and other small things here and there that make the overall pace of the magazine consistent and slow. The fun part is that each issue(released quarterly I believe) uses the type treatment(in this case watercolor) to the headlines of the articles.-Jon

Colors

Extracted from a Wiki page on the magazine:
“Colors magazine is a multilingual quarterly magazine developed in Italy by Fabrica, Benetton’s research center. There are three editions published: French/English, Italian/English, and Spanish/English. Each issue has a theme and covers the topic from an international perspective. The magazine is known for its photoessays and features a sardonic point of view (similar to Benetton advertising).
Tibor Kalman and Oliviero Toscani created the magazine in 1991, and it was produced at Kalman’s design studio, M&Co, in New York City until 1993, when the magazine operations moved to Rome, Italy. For the first three years, the magazine was published in five editions: French/English, Spanish/English, Italian/English, German/English, and Japanese/English.
Issue 4 [1], released in spring 1993, covered the topic of race, and created an international uproar [2] by running full-page photos of the face of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain doctored to look like a black woman [3], filmmaker Spike Lee as a white man, Pope John Paul II as Asian, among others.
Issue 7 [4], released in early 1994, covered AIDS in a bluntly straightforward manner, something no other form of media had been willing to do until that time. It also caused a huge uproar because it featured a full-page photograph of the face of former US president Ronald Reagan doctored to look like an emaciated AIDS patient with Kaposi’s sarcoma lesions [5].
The magazine has produced two books of photography documenting collections of interesting objects and facts from around the world (1000 Extra/ordinary Objects and 1000 Signs book, both published by Taschen).
In 2007 Erik Ravelo, a Cuban designer, took over the creative direction of the magazine, while Benjamin Joffe-Walt became its editor.”
In this particular issue, the magazine is in both Spanish and English. This issue deals with teenagers, and subjects range from wanting to be a celebrity, sex changes, goths, emos, and simply trying to fit in somewhere. What I thought was neat about this particular issue was that it has a level of interactivity involved with it, where you can scan the barcode at a webcam on your computer and read the rest of the magazine.-Jon

The Economist

The Economist a weekly publication that deals with, well, politics, business, and the global economy. For a weekly publication that deals with a lot of text and information, I feel it handles this pretty well, albeit the gripe with the rather dark type. However, with all the information it has to deal with in a short time and basically string one article right after the next, I feel it does this well. What’s useful is the use of a mini TOC if you will at the beginning of each major section, allowing you to jump to that page. This is useful for when you just don’t feel like reading the rest of the magazine and only what you want.-Jon
